Rosalind Porter

Rosalind Porter is a musician and painter. During her youth in London, she became equally at home in both genres. She was a successful young cellist but she had also benefited from her father's drawing and painting lessons. He was a graduate of the Royal College of Art and a ceramicist. She frequently spent many hours on her own drawing at the Natural History Museum in London.

As an adult, music dominated Rosalind Porter's professional life. However, parallel to her career as a solo cellist, she persisted with her activities in art, to which she would later devote herself entirely.

Rosalind Porter's artworks revolve around the fundamental notion of human existence. She explores this primarily in her depiction of expansive, semi-abstract, expressive landscapes. Her mainly large scale oil paintings are dedicated to the mystery of the horizon.

Throughout her works, the overarching idea of the painting is reflected in subtly embedded, fragmentary details. Nature is interpreted as a medium for an individual’s significance in relation to the greater whole.

In her landscape oil paintings, which are paradoxically devoid of people, the manifestation of humanity becomes an organic visual process. This theme continues in her figurative paintings and becomes even more drastic in her graphic work. Her aim is to find metaphors for a state beyond tangible reality.

Her compelling works, characterized by the artist‘s dramatic use of colour and gesture, are often inspired by the striking simplicity of northern England. The interplay of light on the horizon irresistibly draws the viewer into an unfamiliar visual world.

Rosalind Porter has devoted herself for the last three decades exclusively to painting and has been exhibiting throughout Germany.

Born in London in 1950, the artist moved to Paris in 1970 and has lived in Germany since 1972. She currently lives in Treuchtlingen, Bavaria.
